Stories from the weave studio: March

Creative flow

After a busy month, it’s good to look back and see just how much I’ve achieved. The ideas keep coming and it’s hard to find the time to keep up with them; being in a state of flow.

Earth colours

Burnt sienna coloured linen and wool combines with linen, hemp and cotton in the warp of this sculptural wall hanging. Paper interrupts the weave, and the piece splits into three parts which then loop back through the fabric.

I wanted to experiment with a different way of introducing three dimensions into a piece of weaving, by weaving structures (holes, ribbons and hanging warp threads) that can then be manipulated after the fabric has been removed from the loom.

Scarf commission

The scarf commission finished this month was a linen warp combined with a cotton and silk weft. The soothing aqua colours merge into one another along the length of the scarf, and the combination of materials give the scarf a stunning sheen and lovely drape. I will be working more with these materials in the future. One again, a commission has proved to be a brilliant learning experience.

An earlier commission for a scarf inspired by a Scottish hillside also led to two separate yet related scarves from the same warp. The colours are predominantly greens, greys and browns, but pops of yellow echo the bright gorse bushes and the sky blue represents the memories of a mother and her young child on a spring day. You can find the two shown below in my online store LiminalWEAVE.

Mixed media collage

Simultaneously to weaving, I have been making progress with my mixed media collages, working with sketchbooks. The work is moving forwards, the colours and forms, and their placement on the background and the negative spaces these produce are evolving with the theme of ‘earth’ – one of my chosen words for this year.

Studio view

On the left, the tail end of a linen warp is always an exciting opportunity to play, and using newspaper I have woven a fragile yet beautiful piece that reads like an unknown script, looping and flowing across the page of warp (also shown in the central photo).

The middle image shows a corner of the studio that I use for displaying my recent pieces so that I can consider them and, over time, see where they will take me.

To the right are woven paper cord and tape pieces, catching the early light in the studio.

Virtual exhibition

My work ‘Way markers’ and ‘War famine plague repeat’ are currently part of the extensive virtual exhibition Threads of Tomorrow, curated by Rodrigo Franzão of Museu Textil, which takes place from April 1st – May 30th, 2024 and includes work by 148 artworks by 69 artists of 29 nationalities.

Threads of Tomorrow is not content with being just another art exhibition; it is a manifesto for diversity, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of authenticity. The featured artists challenge established conventions, exploring new techniques, materials, and concepts to offer audiences a compelling vision of what the future of art may hold. We are honored to bring this incredible showcase of creativity to a global audience through our online platform,” says Rodrigo Franzao, curator of the event. “We believe that Threads of Tomorrow will not only enrich the experience of art enthusiasts but also foster new dialogues and inspire fresh ways of thinking.”

Framed artwork

A new framed woven art panel is now in my online store LiminalWEAVE. This piece was inspired by the earth colours in the green earths series (from Book of Earth by Heidi Gustafson) and is named ‘Ancient green earth’.
