Rites of spring

A new month and a new look to my website, the making of which has occupied quite some time. It’s tempting to keep tweaking, but eventually there has to be an end point and so here it is. Huddled behind my computer, February has been a dark month with endless rain, but in my garden this witch hazel has been glowing like fire, even on the greyest of days. It’s lifted my mood every time I look out at it. Things have been busy in the weave studio too…
Wallhangings
Sculptural and full of depth, these woven wall hangings have an ephemeral feel to them, semi transparent and casting the most delicate of shadows. The commissioned wall hanging on the extreme left is now making its way to California.

Sculptural textiles
Combining fine warp threads with extremely thick paper weft exaggerates the depth in this honeycomb weave structure. Hidden within the weave are the news stories of the day, since the weft is composed of strips of old newspaper.

Inspiration is everywhere
I cycle past this office building on my way home from work almost every day. Subconsciously the colours and grid pattern must have worked their way into my memory, only to be revealed in the woven wall hanging on the left.

On the loom
Currently a lambswool warp, weaving samples for a commissioned scarf in greens, browns and grey, punctuated by vibrant yellow and blue, in a simple twill weave. The inspiration comes from a Scottish hillside dotted with flowering gorse bushes.

Studio view
On my desk lies my notebook where all my weaving drafts are documented and stored. Alongside, a selection of yarns chosen for weaving the commissioned wall hanging. On the right, I’ve been organising my (large) collection of pebbles, shells, driftwood and found natural objects.
