Vibrant green and earthy hues

Spring has arrived, seemingly in a week: from bare branches to green vibrancy, alight with life. The earth hums with energy; the unfurling of leaves, drawn by the pull of the longer, lighter days, a reminder that nature prevails.
At this time of growth and energy, please join me for a journey through my recent weaving projects and newest work.
Studio view
As the length of the days increases, so does the amount of light in my studio. Towards the end of the afternoon reflected light floods in with the most magical effects. It picks out colours and details. Shown bottom right is a finished piece, titled ‘Glitch’, which is woven using a mixed warp of spun paper, linen and cotton. The weft consists of printed paper which has been cut into strips and fed by hand into the warp. The disrupted text and graphics resemble the ‘glitching’ of a digital image when the signal is lost.
Bottom left shows two pieces from my current series ELEMENTALS, made using paper and linen yarns woven in a waffle weave pattern.
The first three photographs are mixed media collage works incorporating monoprint techniques. These explorations into colours are the precursors to my woven works.

On the loom
Working now on the loom with a warp predominantly of linen with silk and spun paper yarns, I have been weaving a quieter collection of pieces exploring the painting of blocks on the warp which correspond to the interlocking and changing of the weave patterns.
I’m drawn at this time to the greens and blues I presently see in nature all around me.

Commissioned work
It was wonderful to work on a recent commission for a lambswool scarf in purple. As it turned out, the colours are rich and vibrant. I had enough warp left over to weave a second scarf, also using lambswool but combining it with a wool/linen mix in the weft. This scarf is now in my shop, LiminalWEAVE, and is shown here bottom right.

New framed artwork
I’ve recently updated my online store, LiminalWEAVE on Etsy, with some one-of-a-kind framed woven panels, one of which is shown below. The colours and textures evoke the fracturing and digitisation of images.

New in my shop: unique brooches
Also new in my shop, LiminalWEAVE, are a number of brooches, made from handwoven fabrics bonded to wood. The edges of the abstract wooden forms are hand painted in contrasting colours, and finished with a pin fastening at the back.

I’ll leave you with this image of a magnificent copper beech tree in its first flush of spring foliage; such inspirational colours and textures.
