Stories from the weave studio – September

Under tension

September has been a busy month and has flown by. A return to the rhythm of school routine, sunny days and darker mornings with the equinox bringing a noticeable shortening of the days. Back at the loom I’ve had a large commissioned piece to work on, as well as deadlines on the horizon for mixed media work.

The sun shines high above
The sounds of laughter
The birds swoop down upon
The crosses of old grey churches
We say that we’re in love
While secretly wishing for rain
Sipping Coke and playing games
September’s here again
September’s here again

Studio view

This month has been mainly taken up with weaving a large commission headed for New York. Woven as a triptych, these three wall hangings are intended to hang side by side. I’ve enjoyed the challenge of ensuring that the three pieces all hang to the same length – something where the tensioning of the warp is crucial. Woven using a honeycomb pattern, the materials include Japanese and manila paper yarns, linen, cotton, jute and more robust paper yarns. The interplay of fine and thick threads creates interesting shadows when hung against the wall.

Sampling

I’ve also recently sampled a piece using stunning spun paper yarn from PaperPhine. This piece has worked really well and encourages me to continue exploring this avenue.

Colour palette

As the trees begin to take on the warm tones of autumn, I’m drawn to using greens and aquas in my work on paper. This year I’ve been improving my painting skills and continuing to develop my own style. Abstract forms and mark making come to the fore.
